What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the work of becoming the source an AI assistant quotes when someone asks a question in your category. Where search engine optimization competes for position in a ranked list of links, answer engine optimization competes to be named inside a written answer. The practical difference is the unit: you are no longer optimising a page for a query, you are making sure a specific question has a clear published answer attached to your business.

What it covers

Six things, and they are not optional individually

1

Question research

Establishing the real questions buyers ask before choosing a provider, in their words rather than as keywords. This is the part that decides whether everything downstream was worth doing.

2

Extraction

Getting the practitioner's actual judgement out of their head and onto the page. A model cannot invent what you know about your own trade, and an answer built without it reads like every competitor's, because it was written from the same public material.

3

Answer structure

Writing so that a single paragraph answers a single question and survives being lifted out of the page, because extraction is the mechanism and context does not travel with a quote.

4

Entity clarity

Making your business resolvable to one consistent thing across your site, your listings and your profiles, so a model can name it without guessing which version of you is real.

5

Corroboration

Earning mentions somewhere other than your own domain, since your website is the least independent source about you and is weighted accordingly.

6

Measurement

Running your category's questions through the engines on a schedule, because the answers move and a snapshot tells you nothing about direction.

They depend on each other in an awkward way. Research without publishing produces a document nobody reads. Extraction without structure produces good material shaped so it cannot be quoted. Publishing without entity clarity scales confusion. Structure without corroboration gets you a well-built page that no engine has a reason to trust. Doing five of the six well is not most of the result. This is the model we build against, with what each pillar involves in practice.

The honest part

Most of this is just good publishing

It is worth saying plainly, because the category has an incentive not to. Most of answer engine optimization is what a competent publisher would have done anyway: answer real questions clearly, be consistent about who you are, be credible enough that other people reference you.

Two things are genuinely different, and they are the two that justify the separate name.

The unit of competition changed. You are not competing to be the best business in your category. You are competing question by question. A small business can own the answer to a question a national competitor has never addressed, and does, routinely. That is not how a ranked list behaves.

Being mentioned without a click now counts. When an assistant answers the question outright, there is frequently no click to measure, and an answer that names you and is never clicked is not a failure. It is the result. The old measurement, sessions and traffic, misses the outcome you are actually buying, which is why businesses doing this well often see their visibility improve while their analytics look flat.

If a vendor cannot articulate those two points, they are selling content marketing with a new label on it, at the price the new label supports.

A worked example

What this looks like on one question

Take a preschool and the question a parent actually asks: "how do I know if a preschool is genuinely safe or just says it is". Here is the whole discipline applied to that single question.

Research establishes that parents ask this, in roughly these words, and that it comes up before price and before location. It is not a keyword anyone would find in a volume tool, which is precisely why it is available.

Extraction gets the real answer out of the director's head: the specific things to look for on a tour, the questions most parents do not think to ask, the certifications that mean something and the ones that do not, and the honest admission about which safety claims are unverifiable. That last part is the bit competitors will not publish.

Structure turns it into a page where the heading is the question, the answer arrives in the first sentence, and each check is a self-contained item that still makes sense quoted on its own.

Entity work ensures the school is one resolvable business across its site, its listings and its profiles, so an engine can name it without hedging.

Corroboration is the slow part: reviews, local coverage, association listings, anything that is not the school asserting its own quality.

Now multiply that by every other question a parent asks before choosing, and you have the actual shape of the work. Not a campaign. A list, worked through one question at a time, then revisited as the list changes. The bottleneck is the owner's time, which is not where most people expect it to be.

What it is not

Four things sold under this name that are not this

Getting into training data. Not purchasable, not editable, not a service. Training data is fixed when a model is built. Anything sold on this basis is sold on a misunderstanding, yours or theirs.

A markup package. Schema markup helps machines parse and resolve what is already there. It does not create an answer that does not exist, and no volume of it rescues a page that answers nothing.

A monitoring dashboard. Knowing you are invisible is useful once. Paying monthly to keep being told is not a strategy, it is a subscription to your own bad news.

Volume publishing. Forty articles on subjects nobody asks about is worse than four on subjects they do, because it costs more and produces the same nothing.

How you would know

What working actually looks like

The measurement most people reach for is traffic, and it is the wrong one. If the answer resolves the buyer's question inside the assistant, there is often no click to count, and the win registers as nothing in your analytics.

What to watch instead: how often your business is named when your category's questions are asked, whether that is happening in more than one engine, whether you appear on questions adjacent to the ones you targeted rather than only the exact ones, and whether inbound conversations start with people already knowing things about you that you never told them directly.

That last one is the least measurable and the most convincing. A prospect arriving pre-sold, quoting your own positions back at you, is the outcome. Everything else is a proxy for it. Expect it to take months rather than weeks.

Questions and answers

What does AEO stand for?

Answer engine optimization. The name comes from the shift in what people are optimising for: an answer engine writes a response and credits sources, where a search engine returns a ranked list of links. The work is aimed at being one of the sources quoted inside that written answer.

Is AEO the same as SEO?

No, though they overlap heavily. SEO optimises for position in a ranked list of links. AEO optimises for being quoted inside a generated answer. Much of the underlying work is shared, being findable, being clear, being credible, but the target result is different and a business can do well at one and poorly at the other.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

In practice yes. GEO stands for generative engine optimization and describes the same work with a different label. Two names emerged for one discipline because the category is young and nobody agreed on terms. If a vendor presents them as separate services requiring separate budgets, that is a pricing decision rather than a technical one.

Do I need AEO if my SEO is already good?

Probably, because they are separate results with separate winners. Ranking well means search engines consider your page a good destination for a query. Being quoted means an assistant considers your content a reliable source for an answer. Strong SEO gives you a head start on the second, mostly through being indexed and credible, but it does not deliver it.

Is AEO just a rebrand of content marketing?

Partly, and it is worth being honest about that. Most of what works is disciplined publishing: answer real questions clearly, be consistent about who you are, earn mentions elsewhere. What is genuinely new is the unit of competition, which is the question rather than the page, and the fact that being cited without a click now has value where it previously had almost none.

Who actually needs this?

Businesses selling something people research before buying, where the buyer compares options and wants to trust the provider before making contact. If your customers buy on impulse, on price alone, or without any research step, this is a poor use of money. The whole mechanism depends on there being a research phase to be present in.
